Mental health remains a critical concern globally, with recent data highlighting significant trends and challenges. Here's an overview of key mental health statistics from 2024:
Prevalence of Mental Illness
- Adults: Approximately 23.08% of U.S. adults experienced a mental illness in the past year, equating to nearly 60 million individuals. Of these, 5.86% experienced a severe mental illness.
- Youth: Mental health issues among young people have escalated, with studies indicating a 50% increase in mental illness rates over the past 15 years, particularly exacerbated since the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, almost half of young women aged 16-24 report experiencing mental health disorders.
Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors
- Nearly 5.04% of adults reported serious thoughts of suicide. Among adolescents aged 10-14, the suicide rate surged by 167% for girls and 91% for boys between 2010 and 2020.
Substance Use Disorders
- About 17.82% of adults had a substance use disorder in the past year, totaling over 45 million people. This includes 9.41% with a drug use disorder and 11.28% with an alcohol use disorder.
Access to Mental Health Care
- Over 5.5 million adults with mental illness, representing 10.8%, are uninsured. State uninsured rates for adults with mental health issues range from 4.1% in Rhode Island to 24.7% in Wyoming.
Economic Impact
- Mental health issues are estimated to cost the global economy $6 trillion annually by 2030, up from $2.5 trillion in 2010. In the United States, the annual economic burden of major depression is about $210.5 billion.
Workplace Mental Health
- A survey by Deloitte found that 17% of UK finance and insurance employees suffer from all three main signs of burnout—exhaustion, declining performance, and mental distancing from the job—compared to an average of 12% across all sectors. The average annual cost of poor mental health per employee in finance and insurance was £5,379, more than double that in any of the 14 other sectors covered.
Global Perspectives
- Anxiety is the top mental health concern in 43 of the 64 analyzed countries, followed by ADHD in 15 countries, depression in 4, and narcissism in 2. Notably, Ukraine is the only country where anxiety comprises 95% of all mental-health-related searches.
